Welcome to NRP 57

The research and implementation work carried out under NRP 57 was completed in 2010 and 2012 respectively after a period of four years. This inter- and transdisciplinary research programme had a total budget of CHF 5 million. A list of scientific publications, the synthesis report produced by the Steering Committee, and a brochure detailing the key research findings can be found here. As of March 2012, the contents of this website will no longer being updated. Due to the growing use of new communication technologies, people and the environment are increasingly exposed to non-ionising radiation. This includes low frequency electromagnetic radiation – produced by electric power supply lines and household appliances, for example – and high frequency electromagnetic radiation emitted by radio and television broadcasting transmitters, mobile communications base stations, wireless LAN, and devices such as mobile or cordless telephones. Although the possible health effects of electromagnetic radiation on people and the environment have been under worldwide scientific study for some years now, many questions could still not be answered conclusively. The National Research Programme NRP 57 contibuted towards international efforts to clarify these open questions. NRP 57 also helped to improve the assessment of possible health risks posed by current and future technologies.

Council of States committee discusses the findings of NRP 57

The findings of NRP 57 were presented by the President of the NRP 57 Steering Committee and subsequently discussed at a meeting of the Committee for Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy (UREK) of the Council of States, held on 17 January 2012.
The implementation work carried out within the framework of NRP 57 was completed in February 2012.

On A. Ahlbom’s withdrawal from the IARC Expert Panel

On May 22, 2011, the SNSF was informed about allegations of a conflict of interest concerning Prof. Anders Ahlbom, a member of the Steering Committee of NRP 57. He was an invited specialist on a panel of experts of the IARC Working Group which will meet in Lyon May 24 to 31. Ahlbom has withdrawn his participation and has specified in a memorandum his business connections to Gunnar Ahlbom AB .
Initial investigations by the SNSF showed that the synthesis report edited by the Steering Committee of NRP 57 requires no revision.

Summary report by the Steering Committee

The Steering Committee of NRP 57 takes stock of the research programme in its summary report. The report evaluates the outcomes generated by the research from a range of perspectives and formulates specific recommendations for research and practice.

Press conference

The research work carried out within the framework of National Research Programme NRP 57, “Non-Ionising Radiation – Health and Environment”, was completed last year and is now being presented to the general public as part of a national press conference.

Publication of findings in spring 2011

Most of the 11 research projects conducted in the framework of NRP 57 were completed on time in 2010. The final publications of the program are expected in the spring of 2011. Also press releases are planned as well as a presentation of the findings for the public.
