News on the Swiss National Research Programme on risks related to electromagnetic radiation

Publication of findings in spring 2011
Most of the 11 research projects conducted in the framework of NRP 57 were completed on time in the spring of 2010. Now the research groups are analyzing the data and publishing the results. In the fall of this year, the international NRP 57 Steering Committee will meet to make a final assessment of the quality of the projects and to draw conclusions. The final publications are expected in the spring of 2011. Also press releases are planned as well as a presentation of the findings for the public. Subscribers to this newsletter will be informed in advance about the publication and the date of the presentation for the public times.

Switzerland
The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has published a new study on the electromagnetic exposure of compact fluorescent energy-saving bulbs.
Thanks to a newly developed assessment method, the electromagnetic fields of energy-saving bulbs can now for the first time be precisely determined and the field values induced inside the human body assessed. This novel measurement method was developed in the framework of study commissioned by the Federal Office of Public Health and the Federal Office of Energy.

International
The international Interphone study on brain tumor risk in relation to mobile phone use, published in May 2010 by the Interphone Study Group, found no elevated risk for brain tumors with regular use of mobile phones or after 10 years of mobile phone use. Problems in the study design do not allow to draw firm conclusions about an elevated risk for developing glioma related to regular mobile phone use. Because of the uncertainties in interpreting the study results, no definitive conclusions about the association between mobile phone use and brain tumors can be drawn. The Federal Office of Public Health therefore recommends minimizing exposure of the head to the radiation as far as possible.
